Dentist was writing prescriptions in exchange for drugs for his own use, lieutenant says
Cook said Purmell, 59, had a drug problem himself and wrote prescriptions for Vicodin, methadone and codeine, all pain medications, and promethazine, used to relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions and to relax and sedate patients. He was doing so for about 20 people outside his practice, said Cook, who heads the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team.
