why is it tough to pee on opiates. I also get constipated as well and sometimes it hurts to go #2?

Michael V asked:

I have been taking methadones to help my withdrawal symptoms and it takes a while for my pee to come out and my bowel movements are slow and hurt in the morning. Is there anything I can take that will help this? Such as vitamins or certain foods I can eat to prevent this. I’m going to get off methadones as soon as I get better but just would like to know if anyone has the same problem and how it can be fixed. Thanks.

hard stool is a common side effect… go pick up some colace (stool softner) and take it as directed on the bottle. you’ll be ok.

I wondered this too, I was taking Percacet for Dental Work and found it hard to pee?!?!? Maybe it’s because your muscles are so relaxed it’s hard to contract your bladder

It’s very common for bowels to slow with opiates. Constipation is a #1 side effect, and the only way to combat it is with plenty of wter and extra fiber. (you might even want to take a fiber supplement for awhile.) Good luck!

“opiates constrict the muscles of the urinary bladder, and can cause difficulties in urination.”
The first link has advice about foods and other solutions for narcotic induced conpstipation.
Good luck.

Your bladder and intestine are made of smooth muscle. Opiates act on receptors in smooth muscle that essentially causes it to go into spasm. Because of that the normal contractions in your bowel and bladder are prevented from occurring and you have difficulty in defecating and urinating.
