mixing pain medications? Side effects?

Carrie asked:

I am wondering what the side effects could be if a person who was perscribed and regularly took methadone were to also take dilaudid(unprescribed) mixed with a box of wine. Please no jokes I know it is so ridiculous it’s funny but I am trying to help a friend.
I am trying to get him to realize that his lifestyle is causing him the pain that he is complaining about. After he got the dilaudid, when it wore off he had terrible leg pain and went into the hospital for days. Only to get prescribed more dilaudid. I was really hoping the doctors would set him straght about his health issues but they did not. He is now in a wheel chair and no doctor has been able to figure out what is wrong with him.

OH, My God.. No No NO!!!!!!!!!!! Do NOT drink at all. You will die. The dilaudid will supress your breathing and , you see, your brain will not tell your lungs to breathe…. Kind of what happened to that actor Ledger..

It’s never a good idea to mix medications, without checking with a doctor first. And having it with wine is a big no-no!

You can’t help this friend by mixing him drugs like you’re some sort of pharmaceutical bartender. Methadone is a powerful narcotic. Dilauded is the synthetic medical equivalent of Heroine. Now you want to add ETOH (alcohol)?

Exactly “what” type of help do you imagine yourself giving this friend. If he is addicted (a fairly safe assumption if the methadone is prescribed) you then need to forward all complaints and symptoms to his physician. YOU CAN KILL HIM if you self medicate him with unprescribed narcotics and alcohol!

The side effects you were asking about?? Extreme lethargy, hallucinations, somnolence, coma, decreased respiratory function, nausea and vomiting, which if occurred during the period of sleep or coma could kill him (AC-DC front man Bonn Scott died just like that) by choking on his own vomit. His respiratory function could decrease to the point that it is insufficient to support life and he will… you guessed it! DIE. You could shut his liver down. His kidneys could fail.

What are you trying to “help” him with?
