Methadone treatment. I have suffered from dibilitating pain frm spinal stenosis for 4 years now and I have?
been on Lortab 10’s for the duration..it started with taking 2 a day and has gradually built up to 5-6 a day…I still have pain and I feel like lortab has taken over my life even though I know my pain is real..I went to a pain mngmt clinic and he suggested that I take 10 mg methadone..he said I will feel like a normal person again and not have withdrawls from the lortab but the methadone will relieve the pain as well. He said methadone when taken correctly is VERY effective and is a VERY misunderstood drug. I am also having injections to see if they will help. I am already on antidepressants and high blood pressure meds but he said that is ok..Frankly just the name SCARES the hell out of me and I was wondering if anyone has had success with methadone treatment????

Methadone CAN be a very effective painkiller often when other drugs have failed. Many feel it is less sedating/euphoric than other drugs, allowing you to live a more normal life. It is naturally long acting as well. However, it CAN be dangerous especially in early treatment. Doctors need to know how to prescribe the medication, and often they have to start with a sub-therapeutic dose and titrate up slowly to avoid problems, meaning the pt. may not achieve full pain relief right away. It is very important NOT to mix it with other drugs without your doctor’s knowledge–even over the counter meds.
Though methadone is a tricky med to prescribe, it can also be uniquely beneficial for those with chronic pain unrelieved by other medications. Have to had a trial of any other long acting drugs, such as MS contin, Kadian, or Oxycontin?
