Let’s all just take a Humpty Dumpty approach: “‘When I use a word, it means just what I? choose it to mean–neither more nor less.” Recall his definition of “portmanteau” words in _Through the Looking-Glass_. (BTW, if you like Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, as I do, you’ll love Martin Gardner’s annotated version of them, _The Annotated Alice_ — it explains many of the allusions that may be too esoteric for most readers. Gardner also did an annotated version of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”)
